In Kansas, many survivors of domestic violence face significant barriers to accessing services, particularly those with disabilities. The state's geographic spread and varying population densities can exacerbate these issues, especially in rural areas where resources are limited. According to the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence, approximately 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence. For individuals with disabilities, the barriers include transportation challenges, physical accessibility of facilities, and a lack of trained personnel who understand their specific needs.
Survivors with disabilities in Kansas often include those from diverse backgrounds who require specialized services. The state's diverse demographic profile means that not only do these individuals face potential stigma, but there is also a pressing need for culturally competent care. Rural populations may feel particularly isolated, with long distances to services, often resulting in lower service utilization rates. Many of these survivors do not receive the assistance they need due to accessibility issues in both physical and information communication contexts.
The funding targeted at establishing integrated support services specifically aims to dismantle these barriers.
